E-Latin – Online Summer course of Latin

The online summer courses provide a new way in studying classical languages: in a short yet intensive time, they offer to international scholars and entushiasts an incredible experience, which combines the scientific nature of the Higher Education Courses at the IISC with the emotion of reviving the life of the Classical authors in the very same places where they have lived, together with friends who share a common love for literature and humanities. Classes are open to everyone and they require students to speak only in Latin, through the IISC method, which is an inductive-contextual methodology.

Course teaching

The course consists in 100 recorded video-lessons on demand and 5 online lessons via live streaming with a teacher. The first live streaming lesson is held on the first Friday of the course: the teacher leads students to the study of Latin with the IISC methodology and explains the topic of the first chapter of the textbook. Students then receive a link to the recorded video-lessons which they should study and view autonomously during the week. Every Friday, students may attend the live streaming lesson in order to ask questions to the teacher and solve their doubts. They can also actively practice the language through exercises given by the professor. At the end of each lesson, students receive the link with the video-lessons of the following week. The course ends with the final live streaming lesson on the last Friday of the course. Both the recorded video-lessons and the live streaming lessons are held completely in Latin. The professor guides the students in speaking in Latin, since the first day of classes, following a specific methodology. Lessons progress gradually and progressively. The whole course takes place in 4 weeks. Lessons are structured in four modules (each of a week length): a. 1st week: Basic module; b. 2nd week: Intermediate module; c. 3rd week: Upper Intermediate module; d. 4th week: Advanced module. Students may attend one module only, more modules or the whole course, in order to obtain the complete knowledge of the language. The Basic module is open to everyone: no pre-requisite is needed. Those who wish to attend one of the higher modules (without attending the previous level) must take an entrance exam. We suggest to those who have not previous and sound knowledge of Latin through active use to attend the course starting from the Basic level. Lessons require a serious commitment: professors asks to spend some of the free time in personal study. The course deals with the entirety of Latin grammar and guarantees the learning of 1600 most frequent Latin words, which correspond to the 80% of the Classical authors’ vocabulary.
